Sonic Interventions
As founding voices in Sonic Interventions, Gugu and Ziada helped launch a diaspora-futuristic collective of interdisciplinary artists spanning five continents, now based in Berlin. Formed in 2020 out of Berlin’s vibrant jazz and open-air jam culture, the ensemble fuses diverse languages, instruments (saxophone, keyboards, timbales, trumpet, percussion), and rhythmic roots with urban idioms like hip hop, trap, and house. Gugu and Ziada also participated in a Goethe-Institut–backed Refuge Worldwide virtual residency titled State(s) Capture(d) Mixtapes, connecting artistic exchange between Ethiopia and South Africa. refugeworldwide.com
This residency straddles geography, enabling transcontinental collaboration in sound, narrative, and experiment — anchoring their practice in diasporic reflection, sonic archives, and cross-contextual resonance.
